Workloads Continue to Increase Even as Economy Recovers

May 27, 2010 — WFD Consulting’s Second Annual Survey of Workload found that even as the economy has begun to improve, workloads for employees and managers continue to increase and the stress is taking its toll.

Key findings:

  • Nine out of ten respondents report that managers’ and employees’ workloads have increased in the last twelve months (96% and 87% respectively).
  • In the past year, work pressures have grownmost notably expectations for speed of execution (74%) and the demands of managing globally (60%) while the number of employees is shrinking.
  • Eighty percent of respondents said employee stress has increased; morale and endurance also continue to slip.
  • The biggest factors driving excessive workload are inadequate staffing to meet work demands; bureaucracymany levels of approval and slow decision‐making ; information overloadtoo much e-mail and internal communication, making it difficult to filter and prioritize key information; and poor communication and coordination across functions.
  • Most organizations are taking action to address workload issues or eliminate low-value work through business reorganization, work redesign efforts, greater focus on key priorities, and better planning and communication within and across functions.
  • Only half of the organizations have programs and resources to address employee stress.
