It's Never Results-Only I

Patty was an editor whose publications won awards. She ran a tight ship on the budget, too. Her bosses loved her.

Junior editors didn't share that opinion. Not that they stayed around long enough to share it. Patty's junior editors came at went at a rate of one every three months. One-day stays were not uncommon.

At that place and time, employment agencies required candidates who accepted fee-paid positions (which Patty's employer offered) to stay for 90 days or pay the agency fee. But every agency in town waived that policy for the people they sent to Patty.

Her employers didn't seem to care. After all, Patty produced results.

Today, we're in love with results. We want leaders who "drive results." We venerate "do what it takes" cultures. That's short-sighted.

Your job as a boss isn't just to get results. It's to get results while living by the "values" of the organization. You can't be a company that puts people first, if they always come second to results.

Your job is also to care for your people. That's always been true for elite organizations. Marine officers eat last.

In today's knowledge economy, caring for your people is more important than ever. That's because, in today's world, long term competitive advantage grows from people and their relationships and their knowledge.

You want to keep the good ones. You want them to be engaged. After all, they're the ones to really produce results. "Kiss-up but kick-down" bosses make that unlikely.

Boss's Bottom Line

If you're the boss, it can't only be about results. You have to care for your people, too.

The answers to some questions I know you have.

Patty is not her real name. She employed a good friend of mine for about five weeks. When my friend left, she named Patty the "worst boss anyone can imagine" and "worthy of an exorcism."

There is no happy ending. Patty never changed, probably because her bosses never made her change. I heard through the grapevine, years later, that she died in the middle of a tirade. The person who told this to me had also worked for Patty. She declared it "poetic justice."
